What is its greatest fear?ā |

āThe world is shrouded in ignorance.ā |

VevicchÄ pamÄdÄ na-p-pakÄsati; |
āAvarice and negligence make it not shine. |
Japp-Äbhilepanaį¹ brÅ«mi, |
Prayer is its tar pit. |
Dukkhamassa maha-b-bhayaį¹ā. |
Suffering is its greatest fear.ā |
āSavanti sabbadhi sotÄ, |
āThe streams flow everywhere,ā |

āWhat is there to block them? |

And tell me the restraint of streams— |

āThe streams in the world,ā |

āare blocked by remembering. |

I tell you the restraint of streams— |

they are locked out by wisdom.ā |

Where name and form |

cease with nothing left over— |

with the cessation of consciousness, |

āThere are those who have assessed The Dharma, |

and many kinds of trainees here. |

āNot greedy for sensual pleasures, |

Skilled in all things, |

Who do they say is a great man? |

a monk who, after assessing, is nirvanaed: |

thatās who has no disturbances. |

Thatās who, having known both ends, |

is not stuck in the middle. |

warrior-nobles and brahmins here in the world |

performed so many different sacrifices to the gods? |

I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.ā |

āWhatever hermits and men,ā |

āwarrior-nobles and brahmins here in the world |
YaƱƱamakappayiį¹su puthÅ«dha loke, |
have performed so many different sacrifices to the gods: |
ÄsÄ«samÄnÄ puį¹į¹aka itthattaį¹; |
all performed sacrifices bound to old age, |
Jaraį¹ sitÄ yaƱƱamakappayiį¹suā. |
hoping for some state of existence.ā |
āYe kecime isayo manujÄ, |
āAs to those hermits and men,ā |

said Venerable Puį¹į¹aka, |
KhattiyÄ brÄhmaį¹Ä devatÄnaį¹; |
āand warrior-nobles and brahmins here in the world |

who have performed so many different sacrifices to the gods: |
Kaccissu te bhagavÄ yaƱƱapathe appamattÄ; |
being assiduous in the methods of sacrifice, |
AtÄruį¹ jÄtiƱca jaraƱca mÄrisa, |
have they crossed over rebirth and old age, good sir? |
PucchÄmi taį¹ bhagavÄ brÅ«hi me taį¹ā. |
I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.ā |
āÄsÄ«santi thomayanti abhijappanti juhanti, |
āHoping, invoking, praying, and worshiping,ā |

KÄm-Äbhijappanti paį¹icca lÄbhaį¹; |
āthey pray for pleasure derived from profit. |
Te yÄja-yogÄ bhava-rÄga-rattÄ, |
Devoted to sacrifice, besotted by rebirth, |
N-Ätariį¹su jÄti-jaranti brÅ«miā. |
theyāve not crossed over rebirth and old age, I declare.ā |
āTe ce nÄtariį¹su yÄjayogÄ, |
āIf those devoted to sacrifice,ā |

āhave not, by sacrificing, crossed over rebirth and old age, |

then who exactly in the world of gods and humans |

has crossed over rebirth and old age, good sir? |

āHaving assessed the world high and low,ā |

Where do all these sufferings come from, |
Ye keci lokasmim-aneka-rÅ«pÄā. |
in all their countless forms in the world?ā |
āDukkhassa ve maį¹ pa-bhavaį¹ apucchasi, |
āYou have rightly asked me of the origin of suffering,ā |

Taį¹ te pavakkhÄmi yathÄ pajÄnaį¹; |
āI shall tell you as I understand it. |
Upadhi-nidÄnÄ pa-bhavanti dukkhÄ, |
Attachment is the source of suffering |
Ye keci lokasmim-aneka-rÅ«pÄ. |
in all its countless forms in the world. |
Yo ve avidvÄ upadhiį¹ karoti, |
When an ignorant person builds up attachments, |
Puna-p-punaį¹ dukkhamupeti mando; |
that idiot returns to suffering again and again. |
TasmÄ pajÄnaį¹ upadhiį¹ na kayirÄ, |
So let one who understands not build up attachments, |
Dukkhassa jÄtippa-bhav-ÄnupassÄ«ā. |
contemplating the birth and origin of suffering.ā |
āYaį¹ taį¹ apucchimha akittayÄ« no, |
āWhatever I asked you have explained to me. |
AƱƱaį¹ taį¹ pucchÄma tad-iį¹
gha brūhi; |
I ask you once more, please tell me this: |
Kathaį¹ nu dhÄ«rÄ vitaranti oghaį¹, |
How do the wise cross the flood |
JÄtiį¹ jaraį¹ soka-pariddavaƱca; |
of rebirth, old age, sorrow, and lamenting? |
Taį¹ me muni sÄdhu viyÄkarohi, |
Please, sage, answer me clearly, |
TathÄ hi te vidito esa dhammoā. |
for truly you understand this matter.ā |
āKittayissÄmi te dhammaį¹, |
āI shall extol a teaching to you,ā |

replied the Buddha, |
Diį¹į¹he dhamme anÄ«tihaį¹; |
āthat is apparent in the present, not relying on tradition. |
Yaį¹ viditvÄ sato caraį¹, |
Having understood it, one who lives rememberfully |
Tare loke visattikaį¹ā. |
may cross over clinging in the world.ā |
āTaƱc-Ähaį¹ abhinandÄmi, |
āAnd I rejoice, great hermit, |
mahesi dhammam-uttamaį¹; |
in that supreme teaching, |
Yaį¹ viditvÄ sato caraį¹, |
having understood which, one who lives rememberfully |
tare loke visattikaį¹ā. |
may cross over clinging in the world.ā |
āYaį¹ kiƱci sampajÄnÄsi, |
āOnce youāve expelled relishing and dogmatism,ā |
(mettagÅ«ti bhagavÄ) |
replied the Buddha, |
Uddhaį¹ adho tiriyaƱcÄpi majjhe; |
āregarding everything you are aware of— |
Etesu nandiƱca nivesanaƱca, |
above, below, all round, between—Taking nivesana here as ādogmaā, the same sense as in the Aį¹į¹hakavagga. Otherwise it might just mean āstrong attachmentā. |
Panujja viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ bhave na tiį¹į¹he. |
donāt plant consciousness in a new life. |
Evaį¹-vihÄrÄ« sato appamatto, |
A monk who wanders meditating like this, |
Bhikkhu caraį¹ hitvÄ mamÄyitÄni; |
assiduous and rememberful, calling nothing their own, |
JÄtiį¹ jaraį¹ soka-pariddavaƱca, |
would, being wise, give up the suffering |
Idheva vidvÄ pajaheyya dukkhaį¹ā. |
of rebirth, old age, sorrow and lamenting right here.ā |
āEt-ÄbhinandÄmi vaco mahesino, |
āI rejoice in the words of the great hermit! |
Su-kittitaį¹ gotama-nÅ«padhÄ«kaį¹; |
You have expounded non-attachment well, Gotama. |
AddhÄ hi bhagavÄ pahÄsi dukkhaį¹, |
Clearly the Buddha has given up suffering, |
TathÄ hi te vidito esa dhammo. |
for truly you understand this matter. |
Te cÄpi nÅ«nap-pajaheyyu dukkhaį¹, |
Surely those youād regularly instruct |
Ye tvaį¹ muni aį¹į¹hitaį¹ ovadeyya; |
would also give up suffering. |
Taį¹ taį¹ namassÄmi samecca nÄga, |
Therefore, having met, I bow to you, O spiritual giant; |
Appeva maį¹ bhagavÄ aį¹į¹hitaį¹ ovadeyyaā. |
hopefully the Buddha may regularly instruct me.ā |
āYaį¹ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ vedagum-ÄbhijaƱƱÄ, |
āAny brahmin recognized as a knowledge master, |
AkiƱcanaį¹ kÄma-bhave asattaį¹; |
who has nothing, unattached to sensual life, |
AddhÄ hi so oghamimaį¹ atÄri, |
clearly has crossed this flood, |
Tiį¹į¹o ca pÄraį¹ akhilo a-kaį¹
kho. |
crossed to the far shore, kind, wishless. |
VidvÄ ca yo vedagÅ« naro idha, |
And a wise person here, a knowledge master, |
BhavÄbhave saį¹
gamimaį¹ visajja; |
having untied the bond to live after life, |
So vÄ«tataį¹ho an-Ä«gho nirÄso, |
free of craving, untroubled, with no need for hope, |

has crossed over rebirth and old age, I declare.ā |

I shall train myself for nirvanaing.ā |

āWell then, be ardent, alert,ā |

Idheva nipako sato; |
āand rememberful right here. |
Ito sutvÄna nigghosaį¹, |
After hearing this message, go on |
Sikkhe nibbÄnamattanoā. |
and train yourself for nirvanaing.ā |

āI see in the world of gods and humans |

a brahmin travelling with nothing. |
Taį¹ taį¹ namassÄmi samantacakkhu, |
Therefore I bow to you, all-seer: |
PamuƱca maį¹ sakka kathaį¹

release me, Sakyan, from my doubts.ā |

āI am not able to release anyone |

in the world who has doubts, Dhotaka. |

But when you understand the best of Dharmas, |
Evaį¹ tuvaį¹ oghamimaį¹ taresiā. |
you shall cross this flood.ā |
āAnusÄsa brahme karuį¹ÄyamÄno, |
āTeach me, brahmin, out of compassion, |
Vivekadhammaį¹ yamahaį¹ vijaƱƱaį¹; |
the dharma of seclusion so that I may understand. |
YathÄhaį¹ ÄkÄsova abyÄpajjamÄno, |
I wish to practice right here, peaceful, independent, |
Idheva santo asito careyyaį¹ā. |
as unimpeded as space.ā |
āKittayissÄmi te santiį¹, |
āI shall extol that peace for you,ā |

having understood which, one who lives rememberfully |

is a snare, donāt crave for life after life.ā |

Anissito no visahÄmi tÄrituį¹; |
āI am not able to cross the great flood. |
Ärammaį¹aį¹ brÅ«hi samantacakkhu, |
Tell me a support, All-seer, |
Yaį¹ nissito oghamimaį¹ tareyyaį¹ā. |
depending on which I may cross this flood.ā |
āÄkiƱcaƱƱaį¹ pekkhamÄno satimÄ, |
ā[In the dimension of] nothingness, equanimously-observing and remembering [the Dharma],ā |

(replied the Buddha,) |
NatthÄ«ti nissÄya tarassu oghaį¹; |
depending [on the perception] āthere is nothingā, cross the flood. š |
KÄme pahÄya virato kathÄhi, |
Giving up sensual pleasures, refraining from chatter, š |
Taį¹hakkhayaį¹ nattamahÄbhipassaā. |
watch day and night for the ending of craving.ā |
āSabbesu kÄmesu yo vÄ«tarÄgo, |
āOne who is free of sensual desire,ā |
(iccÄyasmÄ upasÄ«vo) |
(said Venerable Upasiva,) |
ÄkiƱcaƱƱaį¹ nissito hitvÄ maƱƱaį¹; |
ādepending on [the dimension of] nothingness, all else left behind, |
SaƱƱÄ-vimokkhe parame vimutto, |
liberated in the highest [of the seven] perception-liberations: |
Tiį¹į¹he nu so tattha anÄnuyÄyÄ«ā. |
would they remain there without travelling on?ā |
āSabbesu kÄmesu yo vÄ«tarÄgo, |
āOne free of sensual desire,ā |
(upasÄ«vÄti bhagavÄ) |
(replied the Buddha,) |
ÄkiƱcaƱƱaį¹ nissito hitvÄ maƱƱaį¹; |
ādepending on [the dimension of] nothingness, all else left behind, |
SaƱƱÄvimokkhe parame vimutto, |
liberated in the highest [of the seven] perception-liberations: |
Tiį¹į¹heyya so tattha anÄnuyÄyÄ«ā. |
they would remain there without travelling on.ā |
āTiį¹į¹he ce so tattha anÄnuyÄyÄ«, |
āIf they were to remain there without travelling on, |
PÅ«gampi vassÄnaį¹ samantacakkhu; |
even for many years, All-seer, |
Tattheva so sÄ«tisiyÄ vimutto, |
and, growing cool right there, were freed, |
Cavetha viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ tathÄvidhassaā. |
would the consciousness of such a one pass away?ā |
āAccÄ« yathÄ vÄtavegena khittÄ, |
āAs a flame tossed by a gust of wind,ā |

gato so uda vÄ so natthi, |
āOne who has comes to an end—do they not exist? |
UdÄhu ve sassatiyÄ arogo; |
Or are they eternally well? |
Taį¹ me munÄ« sÄdhu viyÄkarohi, |
Please, sage, answer me clearly, |
TathÄ hi te vidito esa dhammoā. |
for truly you understand this Dharma.ā |

gatassa na pamÄį¹amatthi, |
āOne whoās come to an end cannot be measured,ā |

(replied the Buddha.) |
Yena naį¹ vajjuį¹ taį¹ tassa natthi; |
āThey have nothing by which one might describe them. |
Sabbesu dhammesu samohatesu, |
When all dharmas have been eradicated, |
SamÅ«hatÄ vÄdapathÄpi sabbeāti. |
eradicated, too, are all ways of speech.ā |
UpasÄ«va-mÄį¹ava-pucchÄ chaį¹į¹hÄ«. |

āSanti loke munayo, |
āPeople say there are sages in the world,ā |

JanÄ vadanti tayidaį¹ kathaį¹su; |
ābut how is this the case? |
ĆÄį¹Å«papannaį¹ no muniį¹ vadanti, |
Is someone called a sage because of their knowledge, |
UdÄhu ve jÄ«vitenÅ«papannaį¹ā. |
or because of their way of life?ā |
āNa diį¹į¹hiyÄ na sutiyÄ na ƱÄį¹ena, (ā¦) |
āExperts do not speak of a sage in terms of As at snp4.9:5.1, read as āinstrumental of relationā. Curiously, the extraneous phrase sÄ«labbatena (not in Niddesa) appears where the reciterās identification of the speaker should be. |
MunÄ«dha nanda kusalÄ vadanti; |
view, oral transmission, or notion. |
VisenikatvÄ an-Ä«ghÄ nirÄsÄ, |
Those who are sages live far from the crowd, I say, |
Caranti ye te munayoti brÅ«miā. |

Do they possess wisdom, or are they still forming wisdom? Bodhi reads kappÄ« (against the Niddesa) in the sense āmannerā. But it seems unlikely Todeyya, or anyone really, would ask whether a sage merely seemed wise. Surely the question must be whether a sage is someone who is still in the process of learning, a question that has been important to the Buddhist traditions and still is today. |

For, having mastered sensual desires, the Blessed One proceeds, The following line lacks a verb, and Norman, Bodhi, and ĆÄį¹adÄ«pa all construe it with abhibhuyya: the sun āovercomesā the earth. But that doesnāt make sense. Rather, the idiom abhibhuyya iriyati leans on irayati in the sense āto keep going, to proceedā. The Buddha āproceedsā (i.e. keeps living) after mastering desires, like the sun āproceedsā shedding light on the earth. |
