to have directly awakened to the right self-awakening unexcelled in the cosmos with its devas, MÄras, & BrahmÄs, with its people with their contemplatives & brahmans, their royalty & commonfolk. |

āMendicants, before my awakening—when I was still not awake but intent on awakening—I perceived light but did not see visions. |
āpubbÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, sambodhÄ anabhisambuddho bodhisattova samÄno obhÄsaƱƱeva kho saƱjÄnÄmi, no ca rÅ«pÄni passÄmi. (1) |
Then it occurred to me: |
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: |
āWhat if I were to both perceive light and see visions? |
āsace kho ahaį¹ obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄneyyaį¹ rÅ«pÄni ca passeyyaį¹; |
Then my knowledge and vision would become even more purified.ā |
evaį¹ me idaį¹ ƱÄį¹adassanaį¹ parisuddhataraį¹ assÄāti. |
So after some time, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, I perceived light and saw visions. |
So kho ahaį¹, bhikkhave, aparena samayena appamatto ÄtÄpÄ« pahitatto viharanto obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄnÄmi, rÅ«pÄni ca passÄmi; |
But I didnāt associate with those deities, converse, or engage in discussion. |
no ca kho tÄhi devatÄhi saddhiį¹ santiį¹į¹hÄmi sallapÄmi sÄkacchaį¹ samÄpajjÄmi. (2) |
(oil lamp simile, pure oil and pure wick) | |
āSuppose an oil-lamp is burning with pure oil and a pure wick; because of the purity of its oil and its wick it does not burn dimly. So too, here a bhikkhu abides resolved upon and pervading [an area with] a pure radiance. His bodily inertia has fully subsided, his sloth and torpor have been fully eliminated, his restlessness and remorse have been fully removed; because of this he meditates, as it were, brightly. On the dissolution of the body, after death, he reappears in the company of the gods of Pure Radiance. [152] |

āThis is the cause and reason, friend KaccaĢna, why among those deities that have reappeared in the same order of gods, some are deities of Defiled Radiance, some deities of Pure Radiance.ā |
ayaį¹ kho, Ävuso kaccÄna, hetu ayaį¹ paccayo yena tÄsaį¹ devatÄnaį¹ ekaį¹ devanikÄyaį¹ upapannÄnaį¹ santettha ekaccÄ devatÄ saį¹kiliį¹į¹hÄbhÄ, santi panettha ekaccÄ devatÄ parisuddhÄbhÄāti. |
āGood, good, Anuruddha and friends! But as you live diligently like this, have you achieved any superhuman distinction in knowledge and vision worthy of the noble ones, a meditation at ease?ā |
āSÄdhu sÄdhu, anuruddhÄ. Atthi pana vo, anuruddhÄ, evaį¹ appamattÄnaį¹ ÄtÄpÄ«naį¹ pahitattÄnaį¹ viharataį¹ uttari manussadhammÄ alamariyaƱÄį¹adassanaviseso adhigato phÄsuvihÄroāti? |
āWell, sir, while meditating diligent, keen, and resolute, we perceive both light and vision of forms. But before long the light and the vision of forms vanish. We havenāt worked out the reason for that.ā |
āIdha mayaį¹, bhante, appamattÄ ÄtÄpino pahitattÄ viharantÄ obhÄsaƱceva saƱjÄnÄma dassanaƱca rÅ«pÄnaį¹. So kho pana no obhÄso nacirasseva antaradhÄyati dassanaƱca rÅ«pÄnaį¹; taƱca nimittaį¹ nappaį¹ivijjhÄmÄāti. |

āWell, you should work out the reason for that. Before my awakening—when I was still unawakened but intent on awakening—I too perceived both light and vision of forms. But before long my light and vision of forms vanished. It occurred to me: āWhatās the cause, whatās the reason why my light and vision of forms vanish?ā It occurred to me: āDoubt arose in me, and because of that my undistractible-lucidity fell away. When undistractible-lucidity falls away, the light and vision of forms vanish. Iāll make sure that doubt will not arise in me again.ā |
