AN 4.16 Exquisiteness-discourse
♦ 16. “cattār-imāni, bhikkhave, sokhummāni.
(there are) four-(of)-these, *********, (types of) exquisiteness.
katamāni cattāri?
Which four?
idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu
Here monks, (a) monk,
rūpa-sokhummena samannāgato hoti paramena;
(The) form-exquisiteness (he) possesses (is) supreme;
tena ca rūpa-sokhummena
regarding this form-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ rūpa-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other form-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na samanupassati;
(he does) not see (that).
tena ca rūpa-sokhummena
regarding this form-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ rūpa-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other form-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na pattheti.
(he does) not yearn for (that).
vedanā-sokhummena samannāgato hoti paramena;
(The) feeling-exquisiteness (he) possesses (is) supreme;
tena ca vedanā-sokhummena
regarding this feeling-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ vedanā-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other feeling-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na samanupassati;
(he does) not see (that).
tena ca vedanā-sokhummena
regarding this feeling-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ vedanā-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other feeling-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na pattheti.
(he does) not yearn for (that).

(The) perceptions-exquisiteness (he) possesses (is) supreme;
tena ca saññā-sokhummena
regarding this perceptions-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ saññā-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other perceptions-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na samanupassati;
(he does) not see (that).
tena ca saññā-sokhummena
regarding this perceptions-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ saññā-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other perceptions-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na pattheti.
(he does) not yearn for (that).
saṅkhāra-sokhummena samannāgato hoti paramena;
(The) fabrications-exquisiteness (he) possesses (is) supreme;
tena ca saṅkhāra-sokhummena
regarding this fabrications-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ saṅkhāra-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other fabrications-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na samanupassati;
(he does) not see (that).
tena ca saṅkhāra-sokhummena
regarding this fabrications-exquisiteness,
aññaṃ saṅkhāra-sokhummaṃ uttaritaraṃ vā paṇītataraṃ vā
(that) some-other fabrications-exquisitness [is more] excellent or sublime,
na pattheti.
(he does) not yearn for (that).
imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri sokhummānī”ti.
These indeed, monks, (are the) four (types of) exquisiteness.”

♦ “rūpa-sokhummataṃ ñatvā,
Form-exquisiteness: having-known (that),
vedanānañca sambhavaṃ.
feelings origination,
♦ saññā yato samudeti,
perceptions: how (they) arise,
atthaṃ gacchati yattha ca.
and where it disappears;
♦ saṅkhāre parato ñatvā,
[volitional] fabrications: alien (they are) known (as),
dukkhato no ca attato.
(as) suffering {and} not ** self.
♦ “sa ve sammaddaso bhikkhu,
truly that bhikkhu who sees rightly,"
santo santi-pade rato.
peaceful, (the) peaceful-state (he) delights (in).
♦ dhāreti antimaṃ dehaṃ,
(he) bears (his) final body.
jetvā māraṃ savāhinin”ti.
(having) conquered Mara (and his) army.
